Rising From the Ashes The Chronicles of Caymin
Ancient Ireland – an era of clan wars, petty kings and invasions by raiders from the north.
As Christianity tightens its hold, magic and the old ways fight to keep their place in the hearts of the people.
Born into this world is Ash, orphaned and maimed, left to die. She is rescued by a clan of badgers and raised to be one of them. As she grows, so does her magic, until at last she comes to the attention of other humans. Some of them want to protect her; some want to use her.
When she bonds with an orphaned dragon cub, the two of them become pawns in a bid for power. Forced to flee, dragon and dragonmage embark on a quest to seek the answers as to why they were bonded and what their future holds.

Rising From the Ashes The Chronicles of Caymin The Dragonmage Saga Book 1 edition by Caren J Werlinger Children eBooks
Caren Werlinger is a versatile and talented writer and story-teller, but this story knocked my socks off. If you like "When Women Were Warriors" by Catherine M.Wilson, The Harry Potter series, or How I trained my Dragon, I am pretty sure you will also fall rapidly into this great adventure. It's a parable-adventure-historical fantasy.Heck, just read it.

Rising From the Ashes The Chronicles of Caymin The Dragonmage Saga Book 1 edition by Caren J Werlinger Children eBooks Reviews
Magic, dragons, mystery, finding one's true self in an unknown world...I loved every bit of it and found myself immersed by the writing.
I received this book for free. Ash, born of fire, is taken in and raised by badgers, scarred on the inside and out. Dive into her journey of discovery and purpose, meeting g her friends and her enemies. Enjoy!
I loved this book. From the very first page when I saw the map of Ireland in Irish I knew I would be hooked. It is a magical mythical story, that leaves me excitedly looking forward to reading book 2.
Magnificent. This is an awesome fantasy adventure story that I've totally fallen in love with. This story is imaginative and heartfelt. The writing is wonderful - I felt like I was soaring across the ocean, right along with Caymin and Peist. Very highly recommended.
This book started great and was very enjoyable. Then it ended with no notice. If you are writing a series tell the reader before they read this one. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to young adults and older with the caveat to obtain other volumes first.
Caren Werlinger’s initial foray into the fantasy genre with "Rising from the Ashes" is magical, moving and—in this reader’s humble opinion—enormously powerful. Her research is impeccable and the characters are richly developed. While initially thought to be appropriate for a younger audience, readers of all ages will be drawn in. Haven’t we all wished to communicate with animals and trees and have them speak to us? Caren touches on that primal need to be connected. The protagonist is honorable, reflecting that better part of ourselves. While Ash has physical scars and longing for family ties, we are privileged to watch this innocent and naïve character grow into her powerful gifts. She would give up her life to heal another creature and has a strong sense of right and wrong. Going back to the question of audience, I have ordered the book for my grand-daughter while at the same time; find myself reflecting on the story, characters and themes often throughout my day. "Rising from the Ashes" is an important and unique contribution to the fantasy literature and is highly recommended. Caren found her voice in this novel. She is a gifted story-teller and has not hesitated to share her imaginings, longings, dreams and love of her homeland with us in this first installment. I know we all wait breathlessly to find out what happens next!
Occasionally a small-press book on my wishlist goes down in price to 0 dollars, and it's my policy to "purchase" the book at that point because I have nothing to lose. The past two times I did this, I got books that didn't excite me enough to continue reading their series, so I came into Rising From the Ashes with middling expectations. However, this book, and this series, is EXCELLENT and it was a total steal to get this book at the price of free.
This is as book that combines nearly all the things I like into one place - animals, magic, schools inside of forests, alternate history, queer characters, and DRAGONS! It was 100% appeal for me, and I loved how the story grows over the three books. At first, you could mistake this for a generic fantasy setting, but it's actually old Ireland during the European Dark Ages, and that came as a super welcome surprise for me.
Writing-wise, the book isn't as flowery with its language as some other fantasy books, but I think the plain writing style suits the tone perfectly. The characters are all well-drawn and easy to keep apart, even if you can't pronounce their names. The main character, Caymin aka Ash, is someone I relate to A LOT. She's raised by badgers, and coming into the world of humans is hard for her. She doesn't understand lying and deceit, she's blunt, and she's connected to her emotions. It's easy to draw a parallel between Caymin and an autistic girl, even if she isn't and it's magical circumstances that relate to her upbringing, but the parallel is there, and that made Caymin a very compelling character for me.
I HIGHLY recommend this series to fans of fantasy and nature. If you like magic and animals, and grew up dreaming of living in the woods with talking animals, you will love this book!
